This year is the 20th season of our Book Club, founded by Lynn Doyle. Book Club meets 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m., at the Lockport Branch of the White Oak Library District located at 121 East 8th Street, 2nd Floor, North Meeting Room*. This year, four books were chosen from recommendations from club member. All LWC members and guests are invited to participate.

October 21, 2025: The God of the Woods
"The God of the Woods" by Liz Moore is a historical mystery set in the 1970s at a summer camp in the Adirondack Mountains. The story revolves around the disappearance of Barbara Van Laar, daughter of the camp's wealthy owners, a family with a history of tragedy. The novel explores themes of family secrets, class tensions, and the search for identity, all while unraveling the mystery of Barbara's disappearance and a past tragedy involving her older brother.

January 13, 2026: Little Wartime Library
"The Little Wartime Library" by Kate Thompson is about Clara Button, a librarian who creates an underground library in a London tube station during WWII. It becomes a refuge for locals, offering books, hope, and community amid the chaos of war. Inspired by true events, it celebrates resilience and the power of reading.

February 17, 2026: West With Giraffes
"West with Giraffes" is a historical fiction novel by Lynda Rutledge, inspired by the true story of two giraffes that traveled from New York to the San Diego Zoo in 1938. The narrative follows 17-year-old Woodrow Wilson Nickel, who experiences a coming-of-age journey while driving the giraffes across America during the Great Depression and Dust Bowl era. The story explores themes of resilience, hope, and the impact of animals on human lives.

March 24, 2026: The Girl from Green Street
"The Girl from Greenwich Street" by Lauren Willig

April 21, 2026: Empress of the Nile
"Empress of the Nile" by Lynne Olson tells the story of Christiane Desroches-Noble court, a French archaeologist who led the international effort to save ancient Egyptian temples from the rising waters of the Aswan Dam in the 1960s. The book highlights her daring and determination in a field dominated by men, showcasing her role in preserving these historical sites, including the Temple of Dendur, now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

May 19, 2026: Let Us March On
"Let Us March On" by Shara Moon is a historical fiction novel that tells the story of Elizabeth "Lizzie" McDuffie, a Black maid in the White House during FDR's presidency. Through Lizzie's eyes, the novel offers a glimpse into life behind the scenes at the White House and explores the experiences of Black Americans during that era, including the challenges of discrimination, segregation, and lynching. Lizzie, due to her close relationship with FDR and Eleanor Roosevelt, becomes a confidante and advocate for the Black community, pushing for progress and inclusion in the face of injustice. The novel spans from the 1906 Atlanta Race Riot to the day FDR died in 1945.
